Beverly Jane McCarthy, the first of six children, was born to George and Lillian (Simonson) McCarthy on January 30, 1928. She grew up in O'Neill, NE and graduated from St. Mary's Academy in the class of 1946. "The best bunch ever", she would proclaim! After graduation Bev worked at the local newspaper office, until she began putting in plugs for Northwestern bell Telephone Company, that connection lasted for 35 ½ years. After four years in O'Neill, she transferred to Omaha and filled a variety of positions with Bell during the following 31 ½ years. Before moving into management Beverly served in a myriad of positions with the communications Workers of America Union at local, district and national levels. The years spent serving as a negotiator during contract bargaining was an experience second to none. A dozen years of attending the annual national conventions as delegate brought many enduring friendships. Her favorite 10 years were spent in the "Pensioner Contact" office which provided special services, assistance, and home visits to former employees/retirees throughout the state. In 1982 the opportunity for an early retirement arose and so she bid adieu to her labors of love at Mother Bell.
Bev returned to O'Neill and enjoyed golf, bowling, fishing, traveling, the Cubs, family, and friends. Now she had time to visit Ireland, relax on the Florida beach, sight see in many states, and follow her beloved Huskers.
Bev was preceded in death by her parents; brother, George Edward McCarthy; and nephews, Gregg and Robert Pruss. She is survived by sister-in law Delores McCarthy of Columbus, NE, sisters Barbara Pruss (Bernard) of O'Neill, NE, Kay Butterfield (Larry) of Beloit, KS, Lynn Higgins (Tom) of Valentine, NE, and her brother Jim McCarthy (Linda) of Dupuyer, MT, nieces, nephews, and very special friends: The Scott & Tonya Gydesen family of O'Neill, NE.
