Charles "Chuck" Appleby was born in O'Neill, Nebraska on July 2, 1952 to Fred and LaVonna (Moler) Appleby. He graduated from O'Neill St. Mary's High School in 1970 and attended the University of Nebraska at Lincoln.
Chuck wore several hats in his work life, including managing a grocery store in O'Neill and Mission SD, owning a bar in O'Neill, and most recently working as a painter in Omaha NE.
During his time in O'Neill, he assisted his father Fred with coaching Irish legion baseball.
Chuck's passions were St. Louis Cardinals baseball, the Creighton Bluejays, fishing, horse racing and reading. He also enjoyed following his nephew, Miles Austin III's football career playing for the Dallas Cowboys, Philadelphia Eagles and Cleveland Browns and then coaching with the Dallas Cowboys, San Francisco 49ers and now the New York Jets.
His horse racing fervor led to several winter trips to Oaklawn Park at Hot Springs, Arkansas where he developed a skill for handicapping the horses!
Chuck, his father and brothers attended numerous St. Louis Cardinal baseball games together. Chuck and his brother Kelly had the opportunity to attend two St. Louis games in June of this year thanks to an amazing organization called Dreamweavers. Chuck and Kelly were given the VIP treatment during their trip and the Cardinals responded by winning both games they attended!
He is survived by his mother, LaVonna of O'Neill, brothers Kelly of Omaha NE and Greg (Kaye) of O'Neill, sisters Linda (Mike) Verzal of Omaha NE, Ann Austin of Union NJ and Ellen (Mike) Ludemann of Pierre SD, many nieces and nephews and caring friend Debbie Donohoe of Omaha NE.
He was preceded in death by his father, Fred, and brother Bruce.
