Funeral Services for Opal Halstead, age 97, of O'Neill, formerly of Lynch, will be at 11:00 A.M., Tuesday, October 10, 2017, at the United Methodist Church in Lynch, NE.

Burial will be at the Highland Cemetery in Lynch.

Visitation will be Monday, October 9, 2017, from 5-7 P.M., with a 7:00 P.M. Prayer Service at the United Methodist Church in Lynch.

Rev. Joel Wentworth will officiate.

Opal passed away Thursday, October 5, 2017, at the O'Neill Rehabilitation and Care Center.

Biglin's Mortuary in O'Neill is in charge of Arrangements.

Edith Opal Mellor was born on July 7, 1920, in Redbird, NE, to Leon and Edna (Hull) Mellor.  She attended Redbird School, District #3, and later Lynch Public School through the 10 ^th grade.  She met Harold Halstead and they were united in marriage on February 12, 1938, in Burke, SD.  To this union, five children were born: Larry, Doris, Helen, Alice and Bill.

Opal and Harold worked and moved around quite a bit when the children were home before settling in Lynch, NE, in 1967.  Larry was born in Inman, NE, Doris was born in Page, NE, Helen was born north of Lynch, NE, Alice was born in Lynch, NE, then the family moved to Washington state for 3 months before moving back to Lynch, NE, where Bill was born. Opal worked at Lueken and Hoy Grocery Stores and she also spent time babysitting.  She enjoyed fishing, making quilts, and she was a great cook.

She liked to play cards, and she loved spending time with her family and watching after her husband before he passed away in 1999.

Opal was a member of the Scott Community Club and the Methodist Ladies Aide in Lynch, NE.

Opal is survived by her five children, Larry Halstead and wife, Janice, of Lynch, NE, Doris Carson and husband, Rex, of Lynch, NE, Helen Lueken of Lynch, NE, Alice Marx of O'Neill, NE, Bill Halstead of Lynch, NE; 18 grandchildren, Sandi Fischer and husband, J.R., Shane Carson and wife, Kelli, Dallas Carson, Darrin Carson and wife, Wendy, Tracy Stahlecker and husband, Rex, Patti Chohon and husband, Pat, Michael Lueken, Tina Dougherty and husband, Andy, Leona Halstead, Lauri Schlachter and husband, Craig, Bill Marx and wife, Sherrie, Melissa Marx and friend, Ron Roth, Lisa Eilers and husband, Josh, Robin Fife, Teri Thomas and husband, Ralph, Greg Halstead and wife, Michelle, Kristi Montano and husband, Jasent, Rachel Scaperotto and husband, Charlie; 49 great grandchildren; 30 great great grandchildren; one sister, Betty Loock of Tyndall, SD; many nieces and nephews

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Harold in 1999; one son-in-law, Kim Lueken; one granddaughter, Emily Lueken; one grandson, William Halstead; two great granddaughters, Ashley Marx and Sarah Schlachter; and two sisters, Delores Sedivy and Ardis Bjornsen.
