Obituary

Memorial Services for Elizabeth Torres Campbell, age 15, of O'Neill will be at 11:00 am on Wednesday, September 30, 2026 at the Word of Life Christian Center in O'Neill.  Visitation will be from 5-7 pm at the Word of Life Christian Center with a 7 pm Prayer Service.  Elizabeth passed away after a long battle with health complication on Tuesday, September 22, 2026 at Nebraska Medicine in Omaha.  Memorial may be directed to her family for future designation.  Arrangements are entrusted to Biglin's Mortuary in O'Neill.

Elizabeth Kay Torres Campbell was born on May 28, 2011, in Long Beach, California, to Brandon Campbell and Samantha Torres.  From the very beginning, Elizabeth was a fighter.  Born with significant medical complications, she underwent her first surgery at just one week old, had a stent placed at six months, and underwent open-heart surgery at two years old.

She was preceded in death by her grandfather, David Menish; her uncle, Joe Winn; her great uncle, Dave Murphy; and family friend, Darb Dye.

Elizabeth spent the first six years of her life in California with her dad and maternal grandparents.  Although she spent much of her childhood in and out of hospitals, Elizabeth never allowed those challenges to define her.  She made the most of every moment and every place she found herself.  She entertained nurses, cooked with her family, and spent countless hours talking on the phone with family back in Nebraska.  Wherever Elizabeth was, she found a way to bring joy and laughter with her.

In 2017, Elizabeth moved to Ainsworth, Nebraska, with her dad and maternal grandmother.  They later moved to O'Neill, where Elizabeth continued to grow and make memories with the people who loved her.

In 2020, Elizabeth moved in with her Aunt Jessica, Uncle James, and cousins Isabelle and Emma.  It did not take long for Isabelle and Emma to become more than cousins—they became the sisters Elizabeth cherished.  Isabelle was her trusted secret keeper, while Emma became the little sister Elizabeth loved to teach, guide, and occasionally get into a little trouble with.

In 2021, Elizabeth was placed on the transplant list, and in 2022, she received a liver transplant.  After being discharged from the hospital, Elizabeth was able to return to a more normal life and simply enjoy being a kid.  In March 2023, she was diagnosed with PTLD.  True to her nature, Elizabeth fought through it and eventually came home to enjoy what she called her best summer life.

In November 2023, Elizabeth faced another battle with rejection.  She was released from the hospital just in time to spend Christmas in the Black Hills with her family.  After that, she had only a few short hospital stays and routine appointments, allowing her to spend more time doing what she loved and making memories with the people closest to her.

In June 2026, a routine PET scan showed a couple of spots that the medical team continued to monitor while adjusting her medications.  In July, Elizabeth was diagnosed with PTLD once again, this time affecting her brain and chest.

Elizabeth would have been a freshman at O'Neill Public High School, where she was looking forward to continuing to grow, make memories, and experience all that the next chapter of her life had to offer.

Through every diagnosis, procedure, hospital stay, and difficult day, Elizabeth remained unmistakably herself.

Elizabeth was an old soul in a tiny body.  She knew more about the medical world than most adults and always wanted to understand what was happening.  She asked questions, paid attention, and made sure she knew what was going on around her.

Elizabeth was a shining star.  She absolutely loved singing and dancing and could light up a room simply by being in it.  No matter what she was going through, she could almost always be found with a smile on her face.  She had a feisty side, too—if Elizabeth decided she did not want to do something, there was a very good chance she was not going to do it.

Her love for stuffed animals was incredible.  She could have happily slept in a bed made entirely of stuffies if her family had let her.  Her love for animals was just as big.  Any stray animal she came across immediately became her new best friend, and even when she already knew the answer would be no, she still had to ask if she could bring it home.

Elizabeth wore her heart on her sleeve.  She loved deeply, cared fiercely, and never allowed the hardest days to take away her smile.  She brought light, laughter, stubborn determination, and love into the lives of everyone fortunate enough to know her.

Elizabeth is survived by her dad, Brandon Campbell, Special Friend Reema; James, Jessica, Isabelle and Emma Shields; grandparents Rashele Campbell, Tom Murphy, Tom and Peggy Shields, and Sherry Winn; aunts and uncles Justin and Maria Campbell and their children, Lydia and Layla, and Cole and Natasha Macklem; great-grandparents Sharon Murphy and Jody Campbell Clemens; and many friends who were more than friends—they were the aunts, uncles, cousins, grandparents, and family Elizabeth chose and who loved her wholeheartedly.

She is preceded in death by her grandfather, David Menish; great uncle, Dave Murphy; uncle, Joe Winn; family friend, Darb Dye.

Elizabeth leaves behind a community of people whose lives are forever changed by having known her.  Her smile, her laughter, her fierce spirit, her love for animals and stuffed animals, and her ability to find joy even in the hardest moments will never be forgotten.

Though Elizabeth's life was far too short, she filled it with more courage, love, laughter, and memories than many could fit into a lifetime.  She will forever be loved, forever be missed, and forever remain a shining light in the hearts of all who knew her.
