After graduation, Gene worked on the farm with his parents and later for a construction company in Pierre, SD. While working in Pierre, he met Sharon McDonald. After nearly losing his life to a serious illness in 1966, he and his brother Johnny decided to go out on the road and make a living running combines and trucks from Texas to North Dakota with the wheat harvest.
