Helen Duffin (Schrunk) Anderson passed away at York, Nebraska, on September 17, 2019, at the age of 97. She was born in Lynch, Nebraska, on September 28, 1921, Helen was the youngest daughter of Francis & Maud Schrunk, both of whom preceded Helen in death, as did her husband of 64 years, Vance Anderson, a brother ,Thomas F. Schrunk.a sister, Jean Hewitson, and a daughter-in-law, Sheri Anderson.
Helen attended all twelve years of school at Lynch, Nebraska, and graduated from High School there in 1939.
She met her future husband, Vance Anderson, at one of his father's evangelistic meetings in Lynch and the couple married November 16, 1941, at the Butte Full Gospel Church. They made their home in Butte. To that union were born two daughters, Patricia and Anita, and two sons, Arthur and Mark. Their early marriage was interrupted when Vance was drafted into the Army in 1943 and spent two years in the Pacific during the war with Japan. The couple continued to call Butte home following the war and in 1948 Vance became a pastor of the Jamison Nebraska Full Gospel Church. Helen took on the role of pastor's helpmate for the next 40 years. She took her role in the ministry seriously and was proud of her husband.
She loved to entertain and was constantly preparing and serving meals for parishioners and friends. On Sunday evenings you could be certain that Helen would be serving up a meal or coffee and cookies for some family in her home.
Interests that Helen shared included baking, sewing, gardening, and playing the piano both at church and at home. Helen enjoyed the summer vacations that the family took each year. After Vance retired, he and Helen traveled to visit grandchildren in Arkansas, Missouri, Texas, Nebraska, Georgia, and South Carolina. Of course, she was the proud grandmother at graduations and weddings of her grandchildren. The trip that Helen and Vance took to the Holy Land was really special and not soon to be forgotten.
Following the death of her husband, Vance, Helen continued to live in her home at Butte, Nebraska, for the next ten years. In September of 2015 she moved to assisted living at the Butte Healthcare Center, then to Country Lane Retirement Village in O'Neill, Nebraska, in December of 2017, and finally to York General Hearthstone in York, Nebraska, in July of 2019.
Although her memory in recent years failed some, she never forgot the days she had appointments for her nails or hair! She loved having her hair and nails done each week. Helen literally "flew" around the retirement home with her walker. When she got behind that walker everyone needed to "look out!" She enjoyed having Willard Kee and Todd Drury stop by on Sunday mornings to take her to church. Of course, she enjoyed telephone calls from her family and you could count on getting a call from her if she hadn't heard from you in a few days. At Country Lane she enjoyed the activities for the residents. She got excited whenever she would win at Bingo! It could be said that Helen paid attention to fashion. She was always properly dressed for the occasion even if it was only going a short distance from her apartment to the dining hall. She was always ready to go out for an ice cream or special treat at the DQ.
Helen lived a full, long life that was richly blessed. She, in turn, blessed others. She faithfully read her Bible every morning and knelt by her bed each night to pray for herfamily. Her faith was strong to the end. She especially enjoyed singing and playing the old hymns of the church.
Helen D. (Schrunk) Anderson is survived by her four children: Patricia Anderson Pinkerman (Loren) of Simpsonville, SC; Arthur Anderson of Ringgold, Georgia; Anita Anderson Pinkerman (Arlo) of Stromsburg, Nebraska; and Mark Anderson (Paulette) of Prairie Grove, Arkansas. She leaves eleven grandchildren: Lisa Helvey-Poole (David) of Greenville, SC; Gina Coffey (Hunter) of Boone, NC; Ryan Pinkerman (Jennifer) of Greenville, SC; Amy Brown (Jez) of Bedford, England; Jonathan Anderson (Kimberly) of Chattanooga, TN; Alison Stephens (Elijah) of Redding, CA; Jeremy Pinkerman (Ronda) of North Sioux City, SD; Sarah Riddle (Todd) of San Diego. CA; Justin Pinkerman (Rosie) of Lincoln. NE; Marqette Gaffigan (Michael) of Rogers, AR; and Conner Anderson of Prairie Grove, AR.
