Helen Fern Appleby was born on October 28, 1920 to Harry and Eunice (Cadwallader) Appleby in Kearney, Nebraska.  When a little more than one year old, she and her parents moved from Kearney to Ewing, in January of 1922, in a horse drawn covered wagon.  From Ewing, they moved 5 miles south of O'Neill on 281, where a tornado wiped out everything.  They then moved to the farm west of Inman.  Helen and her sister, Doris, started school together.  Doris recalled their senior year, when the girls and their boyfriends went to O'Neill for a "sneak day". Superintendent, Mr. McClurg, headed them back to Inman and made the group scrub the black marks off the gymnasium floors as punishment.  Doris remembers they never forgot the experience as it was "quite a job".  The girls graduated from Inman High School in 1939 and just recently celebrated their 80 th class reunion.

Helen worked at the old hospital in O'Neill.  Later, she was a dental assistant for Dr. Burgess in O'Neill.  She met Harold Asher at a local dance and on March 24, 1943, they were united in marriage at the Inman Methodist Church. To this union, one son, Ronald Dean was born on July 5, 1944.  Harold and Helen farmed northeast of Page, growing corn, milking cows, and doing the usual farm chores.  In 1969 the couple sold the farm and moved into Page.  Helen was a cook for the Page School for 17 years.  She was known for her wonderful "homemade" food.  She also did papering and painting for others.

In the earlier years, Harold and Helen faithfully followed their three grandsons' school and sporting events.  The pair enjoyed camping at Fort Randall, playing bridge and taking a ride on the van to the casino.

She was a member of the United Methodist Women and the Ruggers, a group who make rugs, a benefit for the church.

Helen is survived by her son, Ronald (Janette) Asher of O'Neill; three grandsons, Kevin (Jackie) Asher of Hastings, Keith (Penny) Asher of Eagle, Kent (Monica) Asher of Lincoln; 10 great grandchildren, Samantha (Josh) Penas, Spencer Asher, Sydney Noonan, Sam Noonan, Skylar Asher, Brooks Asher, Trey Asher, Makenna Asher, Makenzie Asher and Kaylie Asher, 2 great- great grandchildren, Claire and Callum Penas; two siblings, Doris Nissen of Council Bluffs, Dick (Linda) Appleby of O'Neill; sister-in-law, Lavonna Appleby of O'Neill, Diona Asher of O'Neill, Lois Asher of Powell, Wyoming; many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Harold in 2016; her brothers and sister, Fred Appleby, Bob (Irene) Appleby, Shirley (Bob) Asher; bothers-in-law, Don Nissen, Dick Asher, Jerry Asher, Kenneth (Vonnie) Asher, Ben (Sylvia) Asher; sisters-in-law, Helen (Al) Snoeck, Lily (Herbert) Kemper; many nieces and nephews.
