James (Jim) P. Mullen was born on July 20, 1926 to Michael and Mary "Dolly" (McCaffrey) Mullen on a farm north of Emmet, Nebraska. He completed his education through the 8th grade at District 159. He then went to work helping his father and brother on the farm raising corn and oats and milking cows. He had a fondness for pets, especially the family dogs.
In the summer of 1934, the family moved to Montana in response to the Depression and drought that gripped the country. They made use of their musical gifts and formed a band - winning contests and playing for house parties and dances.
The family returned to the farm in the fall and the music continued to be part of their livelihood. Jim was the drummer and later became a guitarist, both standard and steel. He loved country music and was always up for an impromptu jam session.
Jim joined the Army and served during the Korean Conflict from 1951 to 1953. His tour of duty included time in France and Germany as a supply handler. He was recently honored by the Veteran to Veteran Program for his service, receiving a pin and certificate of gratitude. He was employed by the Dewey Schaffer Ranch for many years.
Jim is survived by his sister, Helen Marie Dvorak of Atkinson, NE; sister-in-law, Ann Mullen of Norfolk, NE; 11 nephews; 17 nieces; many cousins; and countless friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, John Mullen; a sister, Regina Kaup; brothers-in-law, Romanus Kaup and John J. Dvorak; and a niece, Margie Mullen.
