Obituary

A Funeral Mass for Jim Gallagher, age 93, of O'Neill will be at 10:30 am on Wednesday, June 17, 2026 at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in O'Neill with Father Bernard Starman officiating.  Burial will follow in the O'Neill Cemetery with Military Rites provided by the O'Neill American Legion Simonson Post 93.  Visitation will be from 5-7 pm on Tuesday, June 16, 2026 at Biglin's Mortuary in O'Neill with a 7 pm Parish Rosary.  Jim passed away after a short illness on Wednesday, Jun 10, 2026 at Faith Health in Norfolk, Nebraska.  Memorials may be directed to his family for future designation.  Arrangements are entrusted to Biglin's Mortuary in O'Neill.

Warren James Gallagher was born on March 28, 1933 to James and Alice (Kivett) Gallagher in Sioux City, Iowa.  He grew up on the Gallagher ranch near Inman and attended Inman High School.  While in school, Jim played on the high school basketball team.  He graduated with the class of 1951.

After high school, Jim was drafted into the United States Army where he served in Japan, Hawaii, and Korea.  With a camera he bought in Japan, he took up photography.  Jim's time in the army was the only time he was away from Holt County for any significant time.  Anyone who had a conversation with him that lasted longer than ten minutes can vouch for his ability to work his time in the service into any conversation.  Shortly after being Honorably Discharged, Jim returned to Inman and worked on the family ranch.

Jim married Marilyn "Mary Jo" Mahony on August 24, 1957 at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in O'Neill.  They lived in Inman for a time before making their home on his family ranch.  To this union, seven children were born.  Jim really enjoyed haying.  He put up hay and rode horses to help with working cattle into his 80's.  Many nephews and others worked for Jim in the hayfield, all of whom were impressed with his strong work ethic and colorful language.  On the ranch, he built many very sturdy steel gates that will be used for generations to come.  Jim and Mary Jo moved into O'Neill in 1982.

Jim is a member of the St. Patrick's Catholic Church, a member of the O'Neill American Legion Simonson Post #93, and also a member of the O'Neill VFW.  He was also a faithful blood donor and has given a few dozen gallons over many years, even into his 90's.

He enjoyed wood working, playing golf, bowling, playing cards, and building gates using his welding skills.  Jim proudly drove his tractor out to the cemetery in O'Neill every year to help with putting up flags for Memorial Day.

Jim loved animals and had dogs and cats most of his life. He was devoted to his rat terrier, Jodie, and June, a cat he adopted after she strayed onto his street while still a kitten.  Many cats, dogs, and horses will be waiting for him over the Rainbow Bridge.

Jim is survived by his children, Mary Gallagher of St. Paul, MN, Greg Gallagher (Amy Waldo) of Page, NE, Kate (Kurt Mackey) Gallagher of Elmhurst, IL, Dan (Jeff Grinnell) Gallagher of Omaha, NE, Maura Gallagher of O'Neill, NE, Michaela (Leo Pearce) Gallagher of Burnsville, MN, Monica (Hans Simons) Gallagher of Lauderdale, MN; 11 grandchildren; 10 great grandchildren; sisters, Marilyn Park of Schuylerville, NY, Edith Gallagher of Omaha, NE; sister in-law, Kathy Calhoun of Grand Junction, CO; many other in-laws and outlaws who warmly embraced him after Mary Jo passed.

He is preceded in death by his parents; wife, Mary Jo Gallagher in 2005; brother, Ed Gallagher; and brother in-law, Vance Park, as well as many in-laws in the Mahony family.
