A Mass of Christian Burial for June Helen Burkhardt, age 81, of Verdigre will be at 10:30 A.M, Saturday, July 1, 2017, at the St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Verdigre.

Visitation will be Friday, June 30, 2017, from 5-7 at the St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Verdigre, with a 7:00 P.M. Rosary.

Burial will be in the St. Wenceslaus Catholic Cemetery.

June passed away on Wednesday, June 28, 2017 at the Alpine Village in Verdigre.  Biglin's Mortuary in O'Neill is in charge of arrangement.

June was born on October 26, 1935, near Butte, NE, to Arthur and Ethel (Anderson) Schumann.  She graduated from Spencer High School in 1955, then attended Norfolk Junior College and received her Associates Teaching Degree.  June taught in Norfolk for two years before returning to Spencer where she taught two years at the elementary school.

June married Gordon Burkhardt on September 12, 1959 in Spencer, NE.  To this union, 4 children were born:  Bill, Elizabeth, George and Edward.  June worked alongside her husband on the farm until his untimely death in 1993.  She continued to run the family farm until she retired and moved to Verdigre in 2007.

June was a member of the St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church of Verdigre, the Catholic Daughters of America, and the Altar Society.  She loved gardening and tending to livestock, as well as her many cats.  She enjoyed reading and collecting books, and was well known for her cinnamon rolls.  She always made sure you had enough to eat.

She is survived by her 4 children:  Bill Burkhardt of Verdigre, NE, Elizabeth Rothenberger and husband Kurt of Bridgeville, PA, George Burkhardt and wife Sheryl of Winnetoon, NE, and Edward Burkhardt of Verdigre, NE, 5 grandchildren; Cody Burkhardt, Roy Rothenberger, August Rothenberger, Andrea Burkhardt, Austin Burkhardt, 2 step grandchildren; Amanda Lund and husband Clint, Matthew Klug and wife Elizabeth, 6 step great grandchildren and 2 brothers; Carl Schuman and Thomas Schuman of Spencer, NE.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Gordon in 1993, and 2 brothers, August Schuman and Robert Schuman.
