Kathleen Faye Meyer was born in Neligh on February 5, 1954, to James & Ardeth (Ruroede) Meyer. She was their second of eight children and raised on a farm near Orchard. Growing up in a cozy, two-bedroom house and needing a partner (or two) to go to the outhouse in the middle of the night attributed to close, life-long relationships. She was baptized and confirmed at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Orchard. Kathy attended a country school for kindergarten, then Orchard Public School and graduated as valedictorian in 1972.
She married her high school sweetheart, Ed Fick, on June 4, 1972, at Ed's family ranch near Inman. Together they ranched and raised their family of six children.
Her life's work was loving others. She was a constant companion to her husband and a blessing beyond words to her children and their spouses. She made sure each of her grandchildren knew that they were a treasure by spending time with them and making personalized cards and gifts for special occasions. It wasn't uncommon for her to have lengthy phone conversations with her children, siblings, and special friends; the conversations were rarely about her because of her selfless nature. She was filled with the fruits of the spirit: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, gentleness, and self-control and were evident in how she treated others while shopping at local businesses and working at McDonald's and Torpin's in O'Neill.
Kathy enjoyed the "simple" things in life. She loved planting flowers, gardening, cooking, helping on the ranch (especially if it involved riding an ATV), working in the hayfield, going on walks, sewing, crocheting, caring for her pets, and seeing wildlife. Spotting a cardinal brought her such joy.
Kathy leaves to cherish her memory –her husband of 47 years, Ed Fick of Inman; children, Walt (Cecilia) Fick of Kearney, Tara Fick of Omaha, Preston (Sheena) Fick of Norfolk, Tammy (Joe) Jeffrey of O'Neill, Doug (Megan) Fick of Inman, and Lance (Katie) Fick of Broken Bow; sixteen grandchildren Sadie, Leah, Alan, Brianna; Nathan; Dylan, Conner; Zane, Jace; Hailey, Holden, Harper, Hadley, Haddison; Lily, Dawson; her father, James Meyer of Orchard; siblings Cheryl (Randy) Watson of Malcolm, Brenda (Bob) Wood of Orchard, Mark (Pam) Meyer of Orchard, Rita (Chuck) Foxhoven of Norfolk, Lee (Rhonda) Meyer of Neligh, Dawn (Bob) Stamp of Lincoln, and Carrie Meyer of Bow Valley; many nieces and nephews; aunts, uncles and cousins.
Kathy was preceded in death by her mother and grandson, Noah Fick.
