Leila Mae Shaw was born on June 30, 1937 in O'Neill to Samuel and Dorothea (Martens) Shaw.  She attended O'Neill Public Schools and graduated from O'Neill High School in 1955.

Leila met Joseph Kamphaus at a barn dance and shortly after they were married on June 4, 1956 at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in O'Neill.  They lived for a time North of Bassett and in 1958, the couple purchased their home place, west of Redbird, on the Niobrara River.  There they raised their four children, Sam, Susan, Kenny and Nancy.  Upon the couple's retirement, they moved to O'Neill.

Leila was a member of a quilting group at church and enjoyed volunteering during the elections.  She was known for her baking and her family and friends will greatly miss her pies, rolls, breads and cookies.  During the summer months, she did a lot of canning.

Leila is survived by her four children, Sam Kamphaus and wife, Vivienne, of Auburn, Washington, Susan Schaaf and husband, Tom, of Lynch, Kenny Kamphaus and wife, Carol, of Burwell, and Nancy Turpin, and husband, Jeff, of O'Neill; six grandchildren; seven great grandchildren, three sisters-in-law, Ruby Shaw of O'Neill, Judy Shaw of Albion, Genevieve Shaw of O'Neill; many nieces and nephews.

Leila was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Joseph Kamphaus in 2015, an infant son; three brothers, Merlyn Shaw, Bill Shaw, Bob Shaw; and two sisters, Maxine Pochop and Helen Peters.
