Funeral Mass for Leo O'Malley, age 95, of North Platte, Nebraska and formerly of Chambers, Nebraska will be at 10:30 am Tuesday, March 24, 2026 at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in O'Neill. Fr. Bernard Starman will officiate. Burial will follow in the O'Neill Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5-7pm Monday, March 23, 2026 at Biglin's Mortuary in O'Neill with a Knights of Columbus Rosary at 7:00pm. Leo passed away on Tuesday, March 17, 2026 at the Linden Court in North Platte, Nebraska. Memorials may be directed to his family for future designation. Arrangements are entrusted to Biglin's Mortuary in O'Neill.
Leo James O'Malley was born on the O'Malley ranch in rural Chambers, NE, on January 6, 1931. He was the youngest of nine children born to Lawrence and Blanche (Burke) O'Malley. Leo went to country school through 8th grade at the school house located just north of the ranch. He then attended high school in Amelia, NE, until 10th grade. After 10th grade, Leo boarded in Atkinson and graduated from St. Joseph's Catholic High School in 1948. While at St. Joseph's, Leo was a member of the basketball team and made many fond memories.
Following graduation, Leo returned to the ranch where he worked for over 50 years with his beloved brother Jerry. On April 28, 1962, Leo married his beautiful and loving wife Bernadine Rotherham at St. Peter's Catholic Church in Ewing, NE. Leo and Bernadine would share the next 56 years together. They raised their five children on the ranch alongside Jerry, and his wife Kay, and their three children. Those years on the ranch were very simple, but they were also joy filled times in the O'Malley family. During their years living on the ranch, which is the same ranch house where Leo was born, Leo and his family were longtime members of St. Joseph's parish in Amelia.
In 2000, Leo and Bernadine moved to O'Neill where they enjoyed being able to attend daily mass at St. Patrick's and established some wonderful friendships. Bernadine died in 2018. Leo then moved to North Platte in 2021 where he became part of Holy Spirit parish.
Leo was a quiet, humble, hardworking man who had strong faith and rightly ordered priorities in life. Leo leaves behind his most important legacy, which is his family. And, as a proud Irishman, it only seems fitting that Leo left this world to join Bernadine on St. Patrick's Day.
Leo is survived by his five children, Patrick (Colleen) O'Malley of Centerville, SD; Karrie (Dan) Duffy of Rapid City, SD; Charles (Laurel) O'Malley of Chambers, NE; James (Debra) O'Malley and William (Patricia) O'Malley, all of North Platte, NE; 21 grandchildren and 23 great grandchildren; sister-in-law, Marge Rotherham of Crawford; brother-in-law, Edward (Carol) Rotherham of Ewing; along with numerous nieces and nephews.
Leo was preceded in death by his wife, Bernadine O'Malley; eight siblings: Eileen Dowd, Ednamarie Haggerty, Sr., Mary Faith O'Malley, Teresa Dewey, Joseph O'Malley, Mildred Goggins, Gerald O'Malley, and Loretta Hargaden.
