Robert (Bob) Duane Carroll, age 91, went home to be with his Savior on Sunday, August 16, 2026. He was born on June 2, 1935, in Sioux City, Iowa, to Clara and Alfred Carroll.
Robert's father was in the military so their family moved around quite a bit. This allowed Bob to spend time with his cherished grandparents Mary and Louis Carroll, whom he dearly loved. After his dad completed military service in 1946, the family moved to O'Neill, which was Robert's 13th new school. Robert attended O'Neill Public School. He was passionate about athletics and he excelled in football, basketball, and track. He graduated in 1953.
He attended college at the University of Nebraska at Lincoln. Robert also served in the United States Army, in Okinawa, Japan for one year.
In 1960 Robert married his favorite person, Lois Cerwinske, and together they made their home in O'Neill where they raised their three daughters, Gwen, Jennifer, and Chris. Robert and Lois were married for 62 years before her passing in 2022.
For many years he worked alongside his dad at O'Neill Auto Supply and eventually took over the business. O'Neill Auto owned an airplane for a bit and Dad acquired his private pilot license. Dad never really retired. At age 91 you would see him at the store, helping customers and taking care of business. Just three months ago he drove all the way to Billings, Montana to meet up with Gwen for his granddaughter's wedding.
Throughout Dad's stay here on earth, he enjoyed fishing and golfing, playing cards and pool, and attending many many many of his kids' activities. During summer vacations, our family made wonderful memories driving up to Fort Randall Dam in the motorhome and spending the weekends boating, swimming, and skiing.
Robert is survived by his daughter Gwen Compton (Bryan); daughter Jennifer Abbott; daughter Christine Bergmann (Chuck); sister Marilyn Shelhamer and her children Kevin, Scott, and Wendy.
Grandchildren: Katy Conley (Tommy), Erin Gale (Ben), Clay Compton, Jacob Abbott, Whitney Watkins (James), Sydney Abbott, John Bergmann, Hannah Neukom (Grant), Elizabeth Turner (Chase), Naomi Mori (Noah)
Great grandchildren: Kyla Abbott, Johanna and Josephine Watkins, Grace, Judah, Tucker and Jameson Gale, Quinn and Thomas Conley, Maverick, Ava and Audrey Abbott, Shane Harp, Jo Eleanor and Boothe Neukom, and Caroline Turner
Robert is preceded in death by his beloved wife, Lois Carroll, his parents Clara and Alfred Carroll, brother-in-law Paul Shelhamer, brother-in-law Alan Cerwinske, sister-in-law Nancy Cerwinske, nieces Becca Shelhamer and Tara Cerwinske, nephew Connor Dame, and great granddaughter Reagan Gale.
