Ruby was born February 7, 1926 at her home in Walnut, NE.  She was the eighth child of Elmer and Alice (Hathaway) Butterfield.

When she was five years old her parents moved to a place near Oak View Park where many happy times were spent.  When her sisters were starting high school, the family moved again.  This time to a farm outside of O'Neill, NE.  In November of 1942, the family moved to Atkinson where the house burned to the ground in the fall of 1943.  Ruby graduated from Atkinson High School in 1945.  After leaving school she taught school north of Stuart for one year.  The next year she taught at 202 North of Chambers.   After more college courses, she taught one more year at Midway.   It was during this time that she met Merlyn Shaw.  They were married on November 3, 1946.  They were blessed with three lovely children; Marty in 1947, Dixie in 1949 and Dorothy in 1951.

Merlyn and Ruby moved to California in August of 1952 when Dorothy was just one year old.  Ruby worked at Avery Adhesive Label Co.  In 1957 they moved back to Nebraska, as they did not want to raise their children in California.  In O'Neill, Ruby worked in the State Farm Insurance office and later in the courthouse at the County Superintendent's Office and the County Assessor's Office.

Ruby loved to sing and dance and her and Merle and their friends spent several nights driving back to home after dancing the night away.

She was preceded in death by her husband Merlyn and daughter Dorothy and several other family members.

She is survived by a son  Marty and his wife Colette of Page, NE, daughter Dixie Aller of Roseville, CA, son in law Ted Parks of Fremont, NE,  sisters in law; Zelda Butterfield of Chambers NE, Judy Shaw of Albion, NE,  Genevieve Shaw of O'Neill, NE, six grandchildren; Michelle and Gary Parks of Omaha, NE, Ryan and Chasi Parks of Lincoln, NE, Jay and Jennifer Shaw of O'Neill, NE, Stacy Rose of Council Bluffs, IA,  Heather and James Stamps of Roseville, CA, Eric and Janet Aller of Sacramento, CA, and six great grandchildren; Cauy, Clay, Jarret, Avery, Phoenix, and Abigail, and a host of nieces and nephews.
