Sterling was born on March 16, 1924 in Emerson, NE. He joined the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers on May 17, 1943. He served during World War II in both the Pacific and European Theaters. Sterling served under General Patton building bridges for the troops across the Rhine River as an engineer. He was in charge of German prisoners of war after the bomb was dropped on Japan until he was honorably discharged in 1946.

He married Dorothy Mae Severson on August 10, 1946 in Hiawatha, KS. To this union, three children were born: Candace, Stephen, and Elliot. Sterling and Dorothy divorced in 1958.

He married Doris Pheleps in Brazil, IN, in May of 1959, then divorced in February of 1960. In 1976, he married Mildred Hattig. They divorced in 1978.
In May of 1979, he married Betty Jean Custer. They were married until her death on September 24, 1993.

Sterling lived out his later years in the Norfolk Veterans Home and liked to watch old westerns. As he became older, his eyesight failed, so he enjoyed listening to western books on audio. He enjoyed conversing with the nursing staff and always had candy for his favorite nurses. He will be remembered as one of a kind.

He is survived by his two children: daughter, Candace Michaels, and son, Stuart Eliot Henderson and wife Jennifer, and one granddaughter, Christina Mae Henderson.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Betty Jean Henderson, one son, Stephen Eugene Henderson, and brother Harley Henderson.
