Virginia was born August 29, 1926 in Newton, IA to Albert and Hazel (McCuen) Geddes. She grew up in Hayfield, Iowa along with her younger brother, Darwin. Her interests included 4H, band, and chorus. She was an avid reader. Virginia graduated valedictorian of her class at Hayfield High School in 1943.
She attended Mankato Commercial College from 1943-1944 to learn secretarial skills. She moved to Des Moines to work at the main offices of Chevrolet. Virginia continued her education by taking night classes at Drake University.
It was at Drake that she met her future husband, William H. (Bill) Carr. They married on May 2, 1948 at the Methodist Church in Grand Junction, Iowa. Virginia and Bill made their home in Des Moines. To this union, three children were born. Virginia later worked as a long-distance operator for AT&T. She retired in 1988. Virginia and Bill traveled throughout the U.S. and Canada and made one trip to Europe.
Throughout her life, she enjoyed the theater, musical concerts, and art. She was a supporter of the Des Moines Playhouse, Des Moines Metro Opera, Inc., Cornell College, the Des Moines Art Center, and National Public Radio. She was a 50-yr member of Westminster Presbyterian Church, and a long-term member of Chapter GH, P.E.O.
Virginia loved to spend time with her grandchildren. She was very generous to them and never forgot a birthday or holiday. After moving to Chambers in 2006, Virginia never missed an opportunity to watch her grandchildren compete in sports or perform in band.
Education was very important to Virginia. After many years of taking classes part time, she graduated from the Des Moines Area Community College with an Associates Degree in 2000 at the age of 74. She was very proud of the fact that all four of her grandchildren graduated from college.
Virginia was preceded in death by her parents, her brother Darwin Geddes and his infant son Craig in 1952, her son William G. Carr in 1981, and her husband Bill in 2004.
She is survived by two daughters, Mary Ellen Cotton of Gardner, Kansas and Jennifer (Jim) Burtwistle of Wheeler County Nebraska; four grandchildren, Christine (Jeff) Foster, Wendell Cotton, Laura (Jon) Robinett, and Will Burtwistle; and one great granddaughter, Amilia Rose Foster.
